This atmospheric oil painting shows a hillside meadow in soft haze, with three small timber huts or barns in the foreground and a line of trees against a pale blue sky. It dates from the mid-20th century [Period] and is painted in a loose, expressive manner, with the forms dissolving into mist rather than being drawn in detail.
The palette is subdued and tonal: slate greys and blue-greens in the trees and slope, with passages of pink and lilac in the middle distance, yellow-green in the grass and deep oxblood and brown on the roofs. The paint is applied in thick, brushed and scraped layers, and the canvas weave shows through in places, which gives the surface real texture and movement.
