Hand-carved standing figure in traditional Arctic clothing, with both hands raised to the sides of the head.
The figure wears a hooded anorak with a banded hem, trousers and tall boots, all carved in smooth, simple volumes. The face is shaded by the hood and has a serious, watchful expression, with carefully incised eyes, a long straight nose and a down-turned mouth. The raised hands, with cuffs at the wrists, give the pose a striking, almost theatrical gesture. A fine leather cord runs from the hood down the side of the body. The dark surface has a soft sheen and a warm brown undertone where the finish has worn, and the figure stands on a small octagonal base.
Small carved figures like this were made in Greenland and sold as souvenirs and as sculpture. This one has real character and presence, and it works on a shelf, desk or sideboard.
