A hand-carved relief panel in oak, showing a three-masted sailing ship under full sail.
The ship is cut in shallow relief from a single oak board, with its sails billowing and the rigging suggested by a few confident lines. A wavy ridge of hills is carved along the top edge, and the sea is left as the plain, flat grain of the wood. The tool marks are left visible all over the surface, which gives it a direct, handmade character. The oak has darkened to a rich, warm brown with a soft, even patina.
It is a simple, maritime piece that hangs well alone or in a group of wall objects, in a hallway, kitchen, study or holiday home.
