Title Two Carved Wood Figures, Boyo (Buyu) Style, Central Africa, Mid-20th Century
Description Two standing figures in the Boyo (Buyu) style, hand-carved from solid wood. The figures are tall and upright, with heart-shaped faces, half-closed eyes and hands resting at the sides of the belly. The surfaces are fully faceted and show the marks of the carver’s adze.
One figure wears a flat-topped headdress and stands on a round base. The other has a smooth domed head and stands on a rectangular plinth. Each figure is shaped a little differently, but together they make a quiet, sculptural pair.
They have a dark, worn patina, with age-related wear, small surface losses, scratches and minor cracks consistent with use and age.
