This slender, hand-carved wooden figure of the Madonna and Child dates from the mid-20th century. The Virgin stands upright in a long, hooded mantle that falls in one elongated, tapering line from the shoulders to a narrow foot. Her head is gently inclined, with a simple halo carved as a raised rim behind the veil, and she holds the infant close against her chest, his small face turned outward.
The carving is stylised rather than literal. The face is reduced to a few quiet planes with lightly incised features, the folds of the drapery are suggested by soft, flowing surfaces, and the hands are barely articulated. This restraint is typical of mid-century devotional sculpture, where traditional subjects were given a simplified, modernist treatment. The warm reddish-brown wood has a smooth, softly polished surface, with the grain visible down the length of the robe and some tool marks left in the folds.
